Japan long have movies that have female leads, e.g. ten "Zero Woman" movies. "Woan Of The Dunes", "The Naked Seven" is female version of "The Seven Samurai", "Manji Mai" series, "Downtown Girls", "Kumoichi" movies, etc.
I am one of the few people I know who actually LIKED Cutthroat Island, AND The Long Kiss Goodnight.
I thought Geena Davis was more than capable of carrying off a leading role all on her own........
but the critics seemed to disagree and panned both movies.
Gal Gadot more than pulled off Wonder Woman. You are right......movies don't give women enough opportunities to carry the lead.
Themla & Louise was a critical , and box office success.......(also Geena Davis!) and then,.........nothing.
200 male lead action, cop, buddy movies..........
maybe Jennifer Lawerence in The Hunger Games......decades later.
During the war years the women were classed intelligent, so the movies were predominantly aimed at them, and had strong women.
Example Betty Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman. Ginger Rodgers.

Joan Crawford starred in a western Johnny Guitar. [ Imdb.com Link ]
As the demographics changed and only youngsters went to the movies, the movies became dumb and dumber, to appeal to boys.
The film critic Barry Norman noted Hollywood movies were not what they used to be. An understatement!
There are lots of movies with women as the lead. Jane Fonda is 81 and still showing off her boobs.
Other than TCM - Turner Classic Movies, I rarely see any movies from the 40's or 50's. Even to this day, there's not many women actors that can carry a movie. They go quickly to cable.
It depends on the type of movie. There are some movies where I like male leads, but other movies, I like female leads. For instance, I love that the Scream franchise had a smart female lead who survived. But there are other movies where I like male leads, such as adventure films.
Nah, any movie with a female lead role that is made in this day and age is utter crap.
When I watch a movie I want to be entertained not brainwashed with liberal feminist propaganda, so no thanks.
If you look for them, you can find movies with female leads. I get sick of super hero and action films, period. Can only take so much.
Prove it. You say it was equal in the 40's and 50's - show your stats. Because I don't believe it. Westerns alone centered on a male lead 90% of the time (see I can make up facts, too.) Crime Dramas almost always had a male lead. Pirate movies? Male leads.
I actually like it because I'm not too fond of women being main characters in movies unless it's a rom-com...
