There's like 3 different techniques:

Convert to decimal

Convert to common denominators

Butterfly method

I like the Butterfly Method best

18*4 = 64 ...vs... 17*6= 102

So 17/4 is greater.

I usually convert them into the same denominator and compare the numerators that result.

Is 1/3 greater than 1/2? convert into sixths (2x3) and see. 1/3=2/6; 1/2=3/6.

divide the top number by the bottom number. 18/6 = 3 which is smaller than 4 1/4.

18/6 = 3 and 17/4 = 4 1/4

18/6 < 17/4

The LCM of the two denominators 6 and 4 = 12.

The fractions are to be converted to a common denominator.

So, 18/6 = 36/12 and 17/4 = 51/12.

By comparing both, it is found that 36/12 = 18/6 is smaller . (Ans.)

Reduce to lowest terms.

18/6 = 3

17/4 = 4¼

Just simply divide. 6 goes into 18 thrice; 4 into 17 4 times with a remainder of 1. 18/6 < 17/4.

divide! 18/6 = 3.00 17/4 = 4.25

Do the division and find out.

18/6 = 3

17/4 = 4 1/4

Change to a common denominator, then the fraction with the smaller numerator will be the smallest fraction.

For your specific question, a common denominator would be 12.

18/6 = 36/12, and

17/4 = 51/12.

So, of those 2 fractions, 18/6 is smaller.

Haha. Joke?

18/6 is exactly 3

17/4 is 4 and a quarter

So 18/6 is smaller.

18 divided by 6 = 3

17 divided by 4 = 4.25

17/4 is larger

What number do both 6 and 4 go into evenly? Hint: It's after 11 and before 13.

How many times does 6 go into that number? Multiply both the numerator and the denominator by that number.

How many times does 4 go into that number? Multiply both the numerator and the denominator by that number.

You will have your answer.

OR you could just do the math (18 divided by 6 and 17 divided by 4). Whichever gives you the smaller number is the smaller fraction.

convert both to the same common denominator
